After 20 years in prison, and a long wait for the wheels of justice to turn, Bennie Starks has a clean slate.
All the details were ironed-out at the Lake County courthouse Monday morning.
The wrongful conviction dates back to 1986. That’s the year Starks was convicted of raping a 69-year old woman in Waukegan.
Starks was freed six years ago when DNA evidence turned-over the conviction. On Monday, Lake County State’s Attorney Mike Nerheim to agree to vacate a final charge of aggravated battery.
Starks’ reaction — in his words: “It’s finally over.”
