A lifelong Notre Dame fan is hoping to celebrate his 105th birthday with a championship win.
Richard “Dick” Savage from the Class of 1930 is believed to be the oldest living Notre Dame graduate. He calls it a “happy coincidence” that the national championship game falls on his birthday. It would be even happier if his beloved Irish are victorious.
“Today is the day Notre Dame is going to prove we have a good team,” said Savage. “Hopefully, I can say hooray, hooray, hooray.”
Savage was an accountant, before he retired. His wife passed away in 1990. He has 7 children, 30 grandchildren, 62 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.
His home on Chicago’s north side is bursting with Notre Dame memorabilia. The last time the Irish won a national football championship in 1988, he was there. He planned to watch Monday’s game from his living room in his favorite chair, and If they win?
“I’ve gone through this before. Personally, I’m not a drinker anymore, but I’ll buy the drinks,” said Savage.
