Gage Park muffler shop owner killed in robbery attempt
The longtime owner of a muffler shop in Chicago’s Gage Park neighborhood was shot and killed during a robbery attempt.
It happened at “Independent Mufflers” at 56th and Western on Wednesday evening.
Two men walked into the shop, and demanded money from owner Michael Kozel.
When he tried to run away, he was shot in the back.
The 57 year-old died a few hours later at Stroger Hospital.
His wife of 37 years is stunned by his death.
“Unreal. Unreal,” said Antonia Kozel.
Kozel was known for his generosity, and his sense of humor.
“My dad had the biggest heart. And my mom lost her best friend. Over something very stupid,” said his daughter, Amber Kozel.
Kozel owned the shop for more than 20 years. He was a father of two, and grandfather of three.
Two other employees were at the muffler shop at the time of the attempted robbery, but were able to escape.
