Most Chicago Public School students are catching up on sleep during their Christmas break. But, about 40 kids are helping their communities and learning important skills.
20 boys and 20 girls are taking part in a program where they repair dilapidated auditoriums at various schools across the city. They paint, weld, repair the chairs, stage, etc.
They work between 3pm and 8pm, Monday through Friday, and are paid $10 per hour.
Students have to have a “C” average to participate and must be recommended by their principals.
Ninety percent of the participants are at-risk, and the program helps keep them off the violent streets.
“It kept me out of trouble, and it also taught me responsibility early on,” said Tiffany Thompson, a CPS student.
The program runs through the rest of the year.
There is a waiting list, and the program is hoping to expand to other major cities.

There was not mention of name of the program thru CPS. Would like to name of program.
