Two people were sent to Northwestern Memorial Hospital after their car was pinned under a Metra electric train during rush hour Monday afternoon.
It was 5:30 pm when the driver of the vehicle, reportedly a woman, crossed the track with a passenger in the back seat. That’s when the train smashed into the vehicle pinning it under the train. T
he driver had to be extricated from the vehicle and was sent in critical condition to the emergency room. Her passenger was in stable to serious condition.
No word on whether the crossing gates were working properly or if the car was trying to beat the train.
Approximately five trains on the line were cancelled, another five greatly delayed.
All traffic on the streets and rails was back open by 8 p.m.
