District 300 teachers on strike

Another teachers strike begins Tuesday morning. This one affects school District 300 in the far northwest suburbs.

District 300 serves 15 different communities including Carpentersville, and east and west Dundee.

This strike affects 1300 teachers and 21,000 students from Pre-K through high school.

Negotiations for a new contract have lasted about a year.

The school board says it agreed to the teachers union’s demands to reduce class sizes and hire 60 teachers.

The board and the union could not agree on salaries.

The union says it made enough concessions in previous contracts.

“We’re finding that we’re not competitive with the districts around us, which makes it difficult for us to attract and retain quality staff,” said Teachers Union Spokesman Mike Williamson. “We’re not asking for huge bumps, but we are asking that we get more competitive with the districts around us.”

Picket lines will be forming at schools and other locations Tuesday morning.

No new negotiations are scheduled.
