Van carrying high school students flips over, several injured
A van carrying a high school basketball team rolled over on the Indiana toll road Thursday night, sending three people to the hospital with serious injuries.
A spokesman for City Baptist Schools in Hammond says another car was tailing the van, causing the van’s driver to speed up near the Gary exit, lose control and roll off the road.
One 17-year-old student was thrown from the vehicle and pinned underneath.
He is listed in serious condition with bleeding to the brain and a rib fracture.
Another boy, 15, suffered head trauma.
The driver of the van — a teacher at the school — has a fractured skull. He is listed in stable condition.
Two other passengers were treated at a hospital and released.
Police say there were several witnesses to the crash who are working with the Lake County Sheriff’s office as the investigation into the cause of the crash continues.
